Nature is pleased with simplicity, and affects not the pomp of superfluous causes” (Newton 1687, p. 398).
What does simplicity mean to you ? For many it is just a word but for some it means a lifestyle. Have you ever wondered what our ancestors used to do when there was no internet, no television or radio and no electricity either. They became self sufficient and enjoyed life as is. Desires were less and there was more happiness. Sure so called comforts were lacking but there was peace in the heart. Today we run a hustle bustle lifestyle that demands so much time from us that we have forgotten how to be simple anymore.
I can live without food may be for a day but not without internet. Remember the humans from the 2008 “Wall-e” movie ? We have sought of become people closer to them. My kids like to play games on TV or watch a movie more readily than going out and playing in the yard with friends. Growing up, when there was no such entertainment, we were more imaginative and created several games with friends (mostly playing on the street side).
Simplicity does not mean that you stop living but live within the means. Before buying anything ask twice – is this a need or a want. Your conscience will guide you to the truth.
My son recently learned to play in violin, this piece of song written by Elder Joseph Brackett more popularly known as the “Shaker song”. I was moved by how thoughtful and touching this song is.
‘Tis a gift to be simple, ‘tis a gift to be free;
‘Tis a gift to come down where we all ought to be;
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
Twill be in the valley of Love and Delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shall not be ashamed;
To turn and to turn shall be our delight,
Till we turn and in turning we come around right.”
I will sign-off with one closing thought about simple lifestyle. Simplicity is seen in the lives of several great people. Simple living and deep thinking are the foundation of spirituality.
I like your word choice – very nice and descriptive article. The song at the end was very touching, too.
